There are so many hints and foreshadows of Zutara in Avatar like?? How do you miss that? Even 9-year-old me caught it when it was airing. Here are some parallels.
Parallel #1: Alter Egos
The Painted Lady
The Blue Spirit
These are Katara and Zuko’s alter egos–something that they couldn’t be in their daily lives. Even though Katara is caring, she was too busy playing the caretaker for the group, so she rarely had time for herself. Zuko was a banished prince and he obviously couldn’t do those things ordinarily either.
Parallel #2: Lost Mothers
Both lost their mothers to the Fire Nation. Ursa left to protect Zuko [she was banished]. Kya was murdered by a Southern Raider general or commander. This is Zuko’s and Katara’s greatest connection.
Parallel #3: Absent Fathers
Ozai banished Zuko from the Fire Nation and left his son exiled. He abused, humiliated, and neglected Zuko. Although Hakoda loved Katara and Sokka, he left them to join the war effort; the siblings were on their own after that. [I’m guessing this is why Katara has abandonment issues].
Parallel #4: Siblings
Katara and Zuko both have striking contrasts with their siblings. Katara and Sokka are close and very supportive; they have looked out for each other after everything that happened with their family. Zuko, however, has an abusive relationship with his younger sister and is constantly manipulated by her.

These are just a few I’d like to point out. The concept of the Twin Flames is also very interesting and is definitely connected to Zuko and Katara. It is the concept of one entire soul being divided into two and the two individuals are separate souls with similar histories, backgrounds, and even families. (Thank you Aaron Ehasz!)
