“I don’t see that she transitioned from good to evil. I see that she stayed true to what she believed. Just – she stopped believing what other people told her. If you think about it, no villain thinks they’re being a bad guy. Every villain thinks they’re doing the right thing… they all think they’re doing it for the right reason. It’s just: whoever tells the story, is the hero.”

Diamond of the Day part 2 Commentary

Episode: 5×13

Commentary Curtesy of: Katie McGrath (who plays Morgana), and Julian Murphy (executive producer)

Highlights/my commentary of the commentary:

– “Julian has informed me that this episode is very emotional (that’s an understatement) and everybody cries. I haven’t seen this, this is the first time I’m gonna be watching it,” Katie

– [previously on Merlin]

– “And there’s topless Eoin,” Katie

– “That happens quite often. There have been accusations that we do it deliberately,” Julian

– “I’m gonna ask you straight right now-is it deliberate, topless men in Merlin, or just topless Eoin?” Katie

– “There are no homoerotic undertones in Merlin of any kind,” Julian

– (firstly, that’s not what she asked. Secondly, you’re a sarcastic little shit.)

– “I’m glad you said that because I’ve never found any,” Katie *sarcasm*

– (right, totally)

– “No, it’s just not there. It’s all in people’s heads” Julian *sarcasm*

– “I mean, whenever I played any scenes with Millie it was always straight down the line,” Katie *sarcasm*

– (Yeah right)

– “No there were definitely lesbian undertones in those,” Julian

– *Katie laughs*

– (That’s what I thought)

– [Mordred fighting]

– “Alex is the only man in the show that hasn’t gone topless. It just occurred to me,” Julian

– [Merlin and Arthur by the fire. Arthur just woke up]

– “And this is the scene where Merlin tells Arthur,” Julian

– “Tells him what?” Katie

– “The secret that he’s been keeping all this time” Julian

– (that he’s in love with Arthur?)

– “What’s the secret?” Katie

– “It’s that he has magic,” Julian

– “No!” Katie *sarcasm*

– “Which some people say is a sort of metaphor,” Julian

– “For what?” Katie

– “His sexuality,” Julian

– “I think it is entirely as it seems on the screen. I don’t think you put anything else in there,” Katie

– (What is happening)

– “And Arthur reacts [to Merlin revealing his magic] in a different sort of way. An emotional and hurt way. And you’ve gotta ask why that is,” Julian

– “It’s a very beautiful moment between two men,” Julian

– “I think Arthurs just upset that his best friend lied to him,” Katie

– “In no way is magic metaphorical for anything in this show,” Julian

– (Like are you trying to hint at something by constantly bringing this up, Julian?)

– “It’s funny because I don’t actually think you’re being sincere,” Katie

– “I’m always sincere,” Julian *sarasm*

– “You are never sincere!” Katie

– “I’m a mountain of truth and honestly,” Julian *sarcasm*

– “Julian is lying right now. Lying,” Katie

– [Gwen looking worried. Leon walks in]

– “There’s the concerned wife who wants to know where her husband is,” Julian

– “But she has Sir Leon. Why does she need…?” Katie

– “There’s another undercurrent in Merlin. Leon and Gwen,” Julian

– “I felt like I had a moment with Leon,” Katie

– “Did Morgana have any moments with Leon?” Julian

– “I’m talking about me, Katie, not Morgana. We’re two different people. We both know you never gave Morgana a love interest in Merlin,” Katie

– “Um, I gave you Morgause,” Julian

– *Katie laughing*

– “But the infamous mud wrestling scene we threatened you with, we never managed to engineer,” Julian

– “For me and Gwen. A mud wrestling scene,” Katie

– “And he’s not joking,” Katie

– “We tried on a couple of occasions, but we could never quite make it believeable,” Julian

– (So Morgwen almost happened)

– “I’m sometimes worried about you guys sitting in a room trying to make the most ridiculous seems and get them past the BBC,” Katie

– “Not true,” Julian

– “He’s nodding!” Katie

– “Merlin is a family show,” Julian

– “Not in your head,” Katie

– [Arthur gives Gaius the royal seal. He says to give it to Guinevere]

– “There it goes, the last vestige of his heterosexuality..I mean,” Julian

– *Katie laughs*

– “Vestige if his marriage,” Julian

– “Oh my god. This has descended to another level. I thought I was bad in these but I’ve got nothing on Julian Murphy here,” Katie

– “I think the way we directed the scene where Gaius tells Gwen basically makes you think of it,” Julian

– “You know, he ain’t lying again. He has told me this,” Katie

– “I wish I’d have known that when I was, you know…” Katie

– “I still claim that was you and Emilia Fox,” Julian

– “She’s a very attractive woman, what can I say,” Katie

– (Bi Katie strikes again)

– [“Arthur is alive,” says Gaius. “Then why isn’t he with you?””]

– “A tricky one to explain to Gaius. Why he hasn’t come home to his wife,” Julian

– “You..” Katie

– [Merlin feeding Arthur]

– “This is the scene where Merlin feeds Arthur. I’ll just let that hang in the air,” Julian

– [Merlin and Arthur staring]

– “Those meaningful glances,” Katie

– “I should say that before we made this episode, Katie insisted on a kiss between Arthur and Merlin,” Julian

– “My ending, which you didn’t use and I thought would’ve been amazing, is Arthur mortally wounded on the field. Merlin comes up and cradles him in his arms. Merlin to Arthur; ‘I have magic.’ Arthur, takes Merlin’s face in his hands; ‘I know. I think I’ve always known.’” Katie

– (I stan that. Then they kiss right after.)

– [“I’m the king, Merlin, you can’t tell me what to do.” “I never have. I’m not going to change now.”]

– “Aww,” Katie *laughing*

– “To be fair we did think of this episode as a love story between two men. I really think it is, jokes and innuendos aside,” Julian

– “You can’t deny that Merlin and Arthur love eachother,” Katie

– (No, you can’t)

– [Merlin kills Morgana]

– “Colin does this really well, because even though it’s really violent there’s compassion in it. It’s like he doesn’t hate you,” Julian

– “He does hate me, but it is his fault, so…” Katie

– [Arthur dying. “Just hold me, please.”]

– “I can’t believe you kept that in,” Katie

– “Well, you know, he’s dying. The man he loves is dying so he’s holding him,” Julian

– (I’m not crying you’re crying)

– [End]

– “Well, thank you. This is Katie McGrath. Shattering everyone’s myths about the show,” Julian

– “I don’t think you shattered them, I think you just confirmed what other people thought. And I’m glad that Julian could do it with this commentary,” Katie
