AFIN was not meant to be the ending episode – Tapert changed the order. In the original order, Xena is alive in the final episode. (They literally ride off into the sunset together.)

The original order for the end of S6 is:

  • Many Happy Returns
  • A Friend in Need Pts 1 and 2
  • Soul Possession
  • When Fates Collide

I watched it this way with a friend and the plot makes so much more sense in this order, as well – In the first eps on that list, there is even foreshadowing to certain things that happen in When Fates Collide, which makes sense, since it was meant to come last. Everybody. SPARE YOURSELVES the AFIN heartbreak and watch it this way instead!

I figure a lot of people know this, but I’ve seen soooooo many people who don’t and AFIN breaks their heart, so just posting in case – especially for newer fans!
