Honestly if Lena was in mild shock and delight when Clark showed a backbone (“there’s some steel under that Kansas wheat!”) like how must she be reacting to Kara. This woman who isn’t afraid to challenge her and engage her in debate and is still v respectful and polite and adorable–it’s not from a place of hostility, for her name or because of her brother. Karas disagreement comes from what Lena thinks. How many times have people made assumptions about her, simply for her family? Sure, it’s disagreement, but it’s over her own actions, her choices.
And it’s refreshing.
And then she sees that Kara wrote a brilliant article about their interview, and maybe she thinks it’s because of what she said that her mind was changed but no, her editor had her rewrite the first article, and she lets Lena know with a big smile–but it’s not hostile, or scathing, or sarcastic–it’s genuine and sunny and it’s disagreeing with her ideas but not with Lena herself and she’s still there, still coming in and talking to her and treating her like a person and they’re both talking about their past and their families and it’s comfortable, but above all unusual
She’s a Luthor–either someone wants to use her, or hates her with everything in their very being because of her family. Sure, she wants an interview, but she already has that, and that’s still Lena’s opinion she wants.
I’m a bit reminded of Lucy’s relationship with Kara–beautiful woman, daughter of a very powerful man, younger sibling of a very powerful and/or notorious person in the public eye, probably didn’t have very many friends growing up–probably even fewer female friends–and now is in a high power/high stress field dominated by men.
And then Kara Sunny Danvers comes along. They see her smile and her sincerity and her desire to just help and they’re just gone
